There is a Star of David among all those Christian Crosses yet still today there is Religious Bigotry in this programming and in social references. That bigotry is across belief systems and I find a good deal of Anti-Arab sentiment in what is in the media today.

Amazing.

Bush wants to run his administration on Christian Values which is highly immoral and self-righteous for a president of this country. Those of other faith that fight and die have no less right to representation under their Constitution.

I've seen it all now.

Anderson is worried about talking about sex?

I bet !

Good night !

I have little patience with the absence of Aaron Brown these days. For years he talked about doing a two hour program and when it finally occured it was handed over to an inexperienced 'read the script' anchor who wouldn't know ethics if it came to dinner.

Not only that Mr. Cooper wants to corrupt issues of spirituality with 'marvels' of the New Age Movement.

The segment on "Indigo Children" was unfortunate. I find that word creeping into my vocabulary alot with this news team. I don't know if they were trying to prove Anderson was a saint or just simply turning a two hour NEWS HOUR into a tabloid, but, what I witnessed last night was an indulgence into 'a cult' understanding of CHILDREN and not adults that have issues of sociability. That is again unfortunate.

The study of auras have been around a long, long time. That, with reflexology, crystal therapy, massage, and all kinds of other 'body work' methods of coping. What Anderson Cooper 360 did last night was to reward the 'concept' of auras as if to say we can explain 'halos' in relation to angels.

They state these emotionally sensitive children are a result of a 'harmonic convergence' after 1978. People like gastroenterologists are seeing higher percentages of children sensitive to foods. 3% I believe he said.

In the USA we have come to know a rather comfortable life in most instances. It does not seem unusual to me for children, especially children, in a country become more and more atune to each other as citizens, in an age of guns in school and terrorists attacking, that children would spin such disorders.

Auras go back decades. We are biochemical beings and even the smallest mouse will have an aura. The crime of the presentation last night is that it wasn't done to 'debunk' the issue so much as enforce it. I find that unfortunate.

Never once during the presentation did they bother to explain what a 'harmonic convergence' is and what the following is to it.

Here is a link: http://www.experiencefestival.com/harmonic_convergence

When one starts down a road of investigating past cultures and heavy duty spirituality it isn't about God anymore. It's about alternative thought about these issues. I have an open mind but for a NEWS HOUR to INVEST this kind of time into issues that 'plague' so few when this country is in profound trouble on all avenues serves no one. Not even the children of Indigo.

This is to serve as a distraction to the issues that beset the White House and nothing else.

Like I said, "I've seen it all now." I can't believe Anderson Cooper would even consent to this mess. He no longer wants to be considered a professional. A professional would never have indulged this issue so much as been a skeptic of it in a far greater way than existed last night.

Two hours.

When Aaron Brown wanted two hours it was because there were issues of concern to this country and the international community and not to indulge the latest CNN Guru'.

It's a darn shame.

Need someone to stab a pier in the back call Anderson Cooper.

I can only wonder how long this has gone on. How long this mean spirited take over as anchor has lived in Anderson's plotting mind. Anderson Cooper would 'fill in' for Aaron Brown when he was out. It was never a great hour then and I never watched it. But, when he finally started his own news hour it was full of 'gimmicks' to enhance it's interest, with 'uplink' and the like. At that time NewsNight with Aaron Brown was based on newspaper layouts. The title of Anderson's show was to mimic 'The Whip Around the World." Anderson Cooper 360. Come full circle around the world. Do we always get what we covet, Anderson? As a matter of fact when my notes are reviewed I noted the similarity years ago. I found it odd then. He was gunning for Aaron. Nice guys finish last, babe. Anderson will never be a valuable professional so much as a valuable commodity. The problem is he is a commodity packaged to incite war and bring 'hero' status to the impoverished young men of this country for enlistment. That is not supporting the country so much as an illegal war. It is partisan propaganda and not a legitimate news hour.

959

Indeed, AC, go get 'em.

North Korea. Just what we need from Frankenstein more inflammation of an unstable and nuclear situation.

On, my the reality of North Korea and how it is never been know before and here we go again with David's "Whip Around the World" without the benefit of pier journalists. When you are someone like Anderson it is completely understandable why one would be afraid to share the screen with anyone else. After all he did it to his pier. Ah, the music should keep anyone on the edge of their terrified seats.

1002

Frank Cessno - North Korea is starving according to Anderson and we are at an empty field and some cruelty will be carried out, no doubt. The crime is exporting North Koreans to other countries. Human trafficking. Okay. This is not a pleasant subject for anyone. But this is also propaganda at a time when no one needs it. That's right it is nearly bankrupt and there is no doubt Kim feels as though he is walking a line between war and sustaining a nation. These conditions have gone on since the end of the Korean War. As a matter of fact the inflammatory administration of George Walker Bush has made them worse by cutting off essential supplies and creating the 'nuclear crisis' that exists today.

1007

Sarah McDonald - Anderson you are a fool without an understanding of what is happening within that film. No doubt people are terrified of their government but China does complain to North Korea about border crossings. The USA complains about border crossings as well. North Korea is a third world country and seeks not to anger China by controlling the people rather than the symptoms of border crossings. China has it's problems, too. It has a population of over a billion people. China could be approached about these issues as well, but, they will meet criticism with complaints of drug trafficking and the like. This is completely irresponsible journalism. The tape belongs in the State Department and no place else.

Sarah this is not about 'getting away.' Kim is controlling the people though the only methods he has to stop the crossings to China. This is completely unnecessary. If people are upset about North Korea's law and it's enforcement then it needs to address issues of human rights with DC and the return of funding by the USA to North Korea for them to carry on a quality of life for people. The North Koreans are starving because they no longer get aid from Bush.

Arrests begin as Amman blasts are tied to Iraq
By Ed O'Loughlin, Herald Correspondent in Amman
November 12, 2005
The Jordanian Government says at least one of the suicide bombers who murdered 56 people in Amman this week spoke Arabic with an Iraqi accent, linking the country's worst domestic terrorist attack to events in its war-torn neighbour.
Officials said a number of people - Jordanians and foreign Arabs, including Iraqis - have already been arrested as King Abdullah's security forces sweep for those behind Wednesday night's co-ordinated attacks on the Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn hotels in Amman.

New Orleans and it's citizen complaints. Construction Fraud. The problem surrounds the allowed degradation of the wetlands as well. Almost more so than the condition of the levees. What a mess.

1125

Oliver Thomas, Council President. Corruption. You aren't protected alone by the levees. You are protected by the pumps. The plan was supposed to be 17 feet and not 10. COASTAL EROSION. Now you are on the right tract. The levees will never be Cat 5 without the return of the wetlands. Even if you build levees 17 feet high that won't stop a storm surge of 20 feet. Besides I thought the levees were higher than 10 feet. I thought it was 15? Maybe not. That is a true statement, the Republicans would love to have New Orleans die. Complaints about Delta. I agree. They chronically reschedule passengers on flights. Anderson is embarrassed by the bad publicity for Delta. Not interested in the complaint or a bonding with it so much as trying to fend it off. Yeah, he is a real advocate for people alright. As long as it is scripted.

Levee and flood wall failure in New Orleans (following hurricane Katrina)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search
Hurricane Katrina caused extensive failures of the levees and flood walls protecting New Orleans, Louisiana. The subsequent investigations by civil engineers are attempting to find the underlying reason for the failures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levee_and_flood_wall_failure_in_New_Orleans_(following_hurricane_Katrina)

There is an interesting entry at November 10, 2005.

"According to the analysis, they've got the soil strength test. It doesn't show exactly the input for the analysis, but assuming they used it and came out with factors of safety, it's showing the numbers are safe. So it leaves an open-ended question as to why the flood wall failed."
The original design for the steel sheet foundations for the flood walls showed a proposed depth of 10 feet, and the design documents show calculations were made with the wall base at 12.8 feet. According to a New Orleans engineer, the depth was apparently increased later, to 17-foot depth, and this is what was built. However, on November 10 an article in the Times Picayunne reported that investigations using sonar by a forensic engineering team from the Louisiana State University show that at one point near the 17th Street Canal breach the piling extends just 10 feet below sea level, 7 feet shorter than the Corps of Engineers had maintained.
"The corps keeps saying the piles were 17 feet, but their own drawings show them to be 10," van Heerden said. "This is the first time anyone has been able to get a firm fix on what's really down there. And, so far, it's just 10 feet. Not nearly deep enough."
According to Professor Robert Bea, a geotechnical engineer from the University of California, Berkeley, it is likely that the Katrina storm surge created unusual subterranean pressures under the walls. Those pressures appear to have made soil under the sheet pile weaker so that it gave way, moving the steel sheet-pile-and-concrete walls along with it. But engineers studying the levees also say that other, unknown factors, including structural problems in the walls, could also have contributed to the breaches.

Radio talk show host indicted for murder of wife
By Denise Lavoie, AP Legal Affairs Writer November 7, 2005
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --A Missouri radio talk show host was arrested on murder charges Monday for allegedly poisoning his wife by spiking her Gatorade with a chemical found in antifreeze.
Prosecutors said that 31-year-old James Keown began poisoning his wife over several months after the couple moved to Massachusetts in January 2004 after he lied about being accepted to Harvard Business School.
"It was pretty clear that she did not understand what was happening to her or that she was being poisoned," Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley said at a news conference.

How many are in Iran? Saudi Arabia? Syria? Kuwait? How many Iraqis are actually left in Iraq, Nic? Come on now. What gives. I never heard of refugees before.

Who are these suicides, local or crossed the borders.

At least two bombers are Iraqis. Three simultaneous bombings are an indication of a blind spot. Yeah. I don't know, Nic. It can't be more of a blind spot than in Saudi Arabia. There is an aspect to this that is to chaotic. Israel was never able to contain it. The Jordanians are completely traumatized because it's usually the other guy but they have been 'brushed' by this. The 'find' of an attempted attack not that long ago.

Nic, what is the chance that having a 'monarchy' is suppressing information from coming forth. "Taken care of requires accepting care and not telling the caretaker how to give care." I am pulling at straws here, but, maybe it's a communication between the people and their leaders who tend to be constant and not elected. Just a huge guess. Didn't Queen Noor say something about that? People will lose patience with them and speak out. Jeeze. That communication has to be facilitated, Nic. That is a skill. The people have to communicate with anonymous information. It's a safety issue but they could be caught in a bombing so the safety margin is artificial and enabling. There has to be a way, Nic, for these monarchs to facilitate communication of potential attacks that could kill the very citizens themselves. Has to be. They need to be empowered and not victimized.

Israelis evacuated from Amman hotel hours before bombings
By
Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent
A number of Israelis staying on Wednesday at the Radisson hotel were evacuated before the bombing by Jordanian security forces, apparently due to a specific security alert. They were escorted back to Israel by security personnel.
The Foreign Ministry stated Wednesday that no Israeli tourists are known to have been injured in the blasts. Representatives of Israel's embassy in Amman were in contact with local authorities to examine any report of injured Israelis, but none were received. There are often a number of Israeli businessman and tourists in Amman, including in the hotels hit Wednesday.
Israel's counter-terror headquarters on Wednesday recommended Israeli citizens not travel in Jordan. Travel warnings regarding Jordan were tightened a few months ago, but many Israelis still visit the country. Many also visit other regions such as the Jordanian Arava and the ancient city of Petra.

Hezbollah man said behind 1994 Argentine Jewish center attack
By The Associated Press
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - A Hezbollah militant has been identified as the suicide bomber who detonated a van packed with explosives, leveling a Jewish community center and killing 85 people in Argentina's worst terrorist attack, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Prosecutor Alberto Nisman said in a television interview that Ibrahim Hussein Berro, a Lebanese citizen, allegedly carried out the 1994 attack in downtown Buenos Aires, which shook the country's more than 200,000-member Jewish population.
Nisman, who is in charge of investigating the attack, said Hussein "belonged to Hezbollah," an Iranian-backed Islamic militant group. He said friends and relatives of the man identified him through a photograph - a major breakthrough in the decade-old probe.

Syria slaps travel ban on Hariri case officials

By Duraid Al Baik, Foreign Editor
Damascus: Syria has banned from leaving the country those people whose names were mentioned in a recent UN report on an inquiry into the murder of Rafik Hariri, an official said yesterday.
The Syrian inquest into the February 14 assassination of the former Lebanese premier “has begun to question those people named in the report” by German magistrate Detlev Mehlis “as well as in the letter the judge sent to Damascus on the matter of questioning Syrians,” spokes-man Ebrahim Al Darraji was quoted as saying by AFP.

Seen from Tehran, however, the picture looks somewhat different.
This became evident during separate conversations in Paris last week with two senior former officials of the Islamic Republic who have decided to spend sometime in exile "until the dust settles" back home.

Annan seeks to allay Arab fears over Syria

CAIRO (AFP) — UN Secretary General Kofi Annan sought Tuesday in Cairo to assuage Arab fears over possible action against Syria but urged Damascus to cooperate fully with the international probe into the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri.
"The message must go out that impunity will not be allowed and I think for most of the [UN Security] Council members, that is the objective and that will be enough," he told reporters.
He was speaking after talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, on the second day of a visit during which he is also due to meet President Hosni Mubarak.
"I would expect and urge Syria to continue its cooperation with the investigation," Annan said.
The UN Security Council last week passed Resolution 1636, urging Syria to cooperate with UN chief investigator Detlev Mehlis or face the consequences.

'Tel Aviv exploiting pressure on Damascus'

DAMASCUS (AP) — Syria accused Israel on Tuesday of seeking to exploit intense US-led pressure on Damascus to reject calls for peace talks over the occupied Golan Heights.
"Israeli officials are trying to exploit the wave of political, media and psychological pressure on Syria in order to express in a rude manner their hostile attitudes towards Syria," Syrian Information Minister Mahdi Dakhlallah said in a statement carried by SANA, the official news agency.
He was reacting to a statement attributed to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday in which he said that he would not negotiate with Syria on the return of the Israeli-occupied strategic high ground.

HOW to be a suicide bomber - this is not Indonesia. This guy is real? We don't know this. He is saying religion has nothing to do with the bombing and it is all strategic and political. Why? Because the suicide bombers are acting on political basis in their religious beliefs. A DEEP ANGER AT THE PRESENCE OF FOREIGN COMBAT FORCES. That isn't religious based? I think he is making a case out of symantics. The only benefit to going in this direction is to build a stronger case to leave Iraq. The reason to leave Iraq is because al Qaeda is using it as a training ground for incidents like this. So if we are to 'disconnect' from the religious fanatic as a reason for these attacks then it could literally be a chosen methodology to attack without distinction to affiliation. We actually see that? I don’t know. That is 'learned' behavior then of people very desperate for an end to an anger. I think this goes beyond that.

Iraq, Military, 11/9/2005
Al-Qaida organization in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi threatened to launch a campaign of "revenge" in west Iraq after the end of the grace period he gave to the American and Iraqi forces to stop the so-called "iron curtain" campaign they launched since Saturday on the border with Syria.
For the fourth running day, the American attacks continue in collaboration with several groups of the Iraqi forces against al-Qaem area in al-Anbar governorate.
The American army announced on Tuesday that its forces killed five gunmen and detained ten when they broke into a house used by members of al-Qaida organization near Ramadi city.
Earlier the American army said it killed 36 gunmen and detained 200 since the beginning of the operation.

WASHINGTON -- Ahmed Chalabi, the guileful Iraqi politician enmeshed in a row over Iraq war intelligence, resurfaces in Washington this week, at an embarrassing moment for the Bush administration.
Chalabi, in his latest incarnation as an Iraqi deputy prime minister, is due to meet Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday and deliver his first speech in the US capital for two-and-a-half years.
But there will be no meeting with President George W. Bush. A White House spokesman said on Saturday that the president will not be meeting with visiting Iraqi candidates until the December elections are over.

Amman suicide bombings kill 57

Explosions rip Radisson SAS, the Grand Hyatt and Days Inn hotels; more than 115 injured, mostly Jordanians
By Alia Shukri Hamzeh with agency dispatches
AMMAN — Explosions on Wednesday ripped through three Amman hotels, killing at least 57 people and injuring more than 115, mostly Jordanians, Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher said.
The first ever suicide attacks in Jordan targeted Radisson SAS and the Grand Hyatt hotels — both only a block from each other in a commercial and residential Jabal Amman District — as well as Days Inn in Rabia area.
In the deadliest blast, a suicide bomber blew himself up just after 9:00pm in a ballroom at the Radisson SAS while a Jordanian wedding reception was under way, Muasher, also government spokesperson, told reporters.

Elizabeth is assuming that children come first in the happiness of adults. That is not necessarily the case. Elizabeth is still struggling with her own frustration as her unpublished study is as well that they are the 'center' of the adults world. Not so. Children are importantly provided for but a 'BAD MARRIAGE' is not a good substitution for divorce. No one is saying Divorce is great. Anyone who has gone through divorce knows this is not fun for anyone. I think the courts do a heck of a job. Elizabeth needs to grow up and publish her study. I believe her 'focus' is too 'child indulgent.' Dr. Ahrons is focusing on the fact that the divorce is inevitable and the children have to be preserved in their needs to love their parents and grow into healthy, happy adults. I have two wonderful sons that I enjoyed sole custody of for all their lives with sufficient support through a country probation officer and they are great. My guys were not perfect growing up and I didn't expect them to be. They had their times of trouble but never so much that their lives and futures were out of control. My guys played games that were fun and emotionally up. We didn't shoot anyone. We jumped over things and there was a lot of eye/hand coordination with the game controls. You know. CNN scoffs at history as Cooper takes anchor post
Tim Goodman
Monday, November 7, 2005
Jonathan Klein, president of CNN and the architect for the ouster of Aaron Brown and the ascension of Anderson Cooper, graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in history.
Uh-oh.
Maybe the philosophy of George Santayana -- "Those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" -- never made it into class, even in its misquoted form: "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it."
Same idea, really, minus the grace of the original. But all of this points, as it often does in TV, to one inescapable name:
Ashleigh Banfield.
Or, for those of you with longer memories: Arthur Kent.
In his zeal to make Anderson Cooper the poster boy of cable news -- apparently at all costs and with nary a concern about overexposure -- Klein is taking a gamble that history is likely to reveal as a miscalculation. One man -- even one as talented and likable as Cooper -- does not turn around a news network.
Though Klein has a newsman's bio, with a long and varied stint at CBS, he seems most intent on seizing on the palpable but unweathered hype surrounding Cooper, and that has nothing to do with journalism and everything to do with being a suit.
Cooper was just another reporter with a show until Hurricane Katrina brought out a kind of emotionalism in his reporting that had been foreign to objective news coverage -- for a reason.
There's no crying in journalism.
Though others did, in fact, cry, and others were angry at the unacceptably slow response by FEMA and the White House, Cooper was on a mission there. Or at least he stood out among the many other missionaries. It happens all the time. Someone stands out. Sometimes he ends up being Dan Rather. Sometimes he ends up labeled "Scud Stud."
There is always a hook. A pair of glasses, maybe. A khaki jacket. But Cooper seemingly has it all: pedigree, looks, hipness, modernity.
Others have had it all too -- except longevity.
Cooper's tears were real and his pain at the plight of those ruined by Katrina was palpable. He hit a nerve -- at the time. He was anointed in the press. But natural disasters come and go, and nobody can sustain that kind of reportorial demeanor in the long term -- nor would people want to watch it. Already Cooper seems perhaps too ready for his moment and too ever-present around tragedy. Got hurricane? Got Cooper?
Back in the safe confines of the studio, he has some less honed and more annoying tendencies -- self-aggrandizement, a willingness to play someone's version of a tech-savvy anchor -- that a good news executive might manage a little more closely. But Klein appears to be smitten with Cooper and his buzz-worthiness, even telling the New York Times that "clearly, America is embracing Anderson Cooper" and noting that he's being satirized on "Saturday Night Live," as if that were a good thing.
A reminder: Ashleigh Banfield.
Banfield got a ton of ink. She got buzz. She got satirized. Then she got lost.
That's not to say Cooper is in the same league of fleeting media celebrity. MSNBC has always been desperate for real talent and seriously blind to it when it comes to women (hello, Rita Cosby).
Cooper, more talented in many ways, is likely to have a longer, more fruitful career. But that career has yet to suffer the inevitable media backlash that comes with insta-fame (beyond his Vanderbilt background) and the bank-on-it boredom viewers develop with anchors-as-stars. Cooper may be hot now, but unless he morphs into Jon Stewart, there are only so many book deals and promotions that can keep him afloat and in the zeitgeist long term.
Klein's rejiggering of CNN's schedule is a real mystery. It seems predicated on a relatively slight uptick in viewers that has yet to be sustained, some positive press for Cooper that has also yet to be sustained and a meritless belief in Wolf Blitzer's "Situation Room," a show that desperately wants to be ground zero for breaking news but often seems like pointless plate spinning or unsophisticated sausage making.
"The Situation Room" is an all-heat, no-light management concoction that Klein seems inordinately fond of. Perhaps this is linked to his founding the FeedRoom, a broadband video company that fed 1 million video clips a day to clients, according to CNN.
"FeedRoom." "Situation Room." One was prepackaged news. The other shows you how news gets packaged. The trouble comes out the other end: It's superficial and boring. And yet Klein believes people want it twice a night, three hours total. Which raises the question: Has he watched it?
Cooper should be smart enough to know that Klein -- who just ran a respected newsman off the network with a decided lack of dignity -- is desperate for solutions. Klein appears to be not so much grooming talent as exploiting it. The battle for dominance in the 24-hour news business is a ratings horse race, and Klein put Brown out to pasture and then slapped a saddle on Cooper.
These moves seem tethered less to a leader's vision than to some water cooler assumption that Cooper is the next big thing. If Klein thinks "America is embracing Cooper," then what is America doing to Fox News' Shepherd Smith, who drubs Cooper in the ratings? Bear-hugging the breath out of him?
This is one of the forgotten elements of the Cooper-CNN hype machine. Fox News is handing CNN its head virtually every night. Klein was brought on board after a long, laughable line of CNN management successions -- each new person failing more spectacularly than the last -- to stop this drubbing. He hasn't. So maybe that's the history Klein is focusing on -- the failure of his predecessors. To avoid their fate, he's building CNN around Cooper and hoping viewers will come.
With a nod back to Santayana, and a belief that Cooper may someday validate Klein's enormous burden of faith in him, here's a thought: "There is a kind of courtesy in skepticism. It would be an offense against polite conventions to press our doubts too far."
So good luck to you, Anderson Cooper. Keep history on your mind, but two words off your lips:
Ashleigh Banfield.

Oil Company Blamed For Rig Blast in Brazil
Platform may sink in 2 days, creating spill
Sebastian Rotella / Los Angeles Times 17mar01
Sao Paulo, Brazil -- Union leaders and government officials accused Brazil's national oil company yesterday of failing to take precautions that could have prevented an accident that killed as many as 10 workers and damaged one of the world's largest offshore oil platforms.
Three explosions devastated the 40-story platform in the Roncador oil field in the Atlantic Ocean about 80 miles from the coast and 120 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. It is unclear what caused the explosions.
The accident left the colossal structure, which was commissioned just last year, leaning at a precarious angle and threatened to cause an oil spill.
Officials of Petrobras, the giant state oil company, said yesterday that the structure was likely to sink within two days and that emergency response teams in boats and helicopters were ready to mitigate a possible spill. Experts said such a spill probably would not significantly damage the environment.
Only one death has been confirmed, and one worker was hospitalized with severe burns. But nine missing workers are presumed dead.
The accident further damaged the image of Petrobras only months after a spill caused environmental damage in southern Brazil. The latest problem was expected to cause operating losses of hundreds of millions of dollars.
There were 175 employees on the Italian-made platform at the time of the explosions. The rig, which accounted for about 5 percent of the nation's daily oil production, was producing 80,000 barrels a day and was expected to reach a target of 180,000 barrels daily at full capacity.
Oil workers staged protests across Brazil yesterday. Union leaders allege that aggressive cost-cutting and the use of inexperienced contract workers have resulted in 82 deaths nationwide at company facilities in the past three years. Sixty-six of the victims were contract workers, according to union statistics.
Media reports yesterday said federal prosecutors who enforce job safety regulations alleged that the accident could have been prevented if the company had complied with judicial orders to create safety commissions at all its platforms.
But the company's manager for security and environmental issues, Irani Varella, said that Petrobras officials do not believe that safety problems were to blame.
And Petrobras denied allegations that the use of temporary contract workers played any role.
Like other state-run enterprises in Latin America, Petrobras has been modernizing and streamlining operations, cutting its payroll from 70,000 to 30, 000 during the past seven years. The company racked up record earnings last year, but the opening of the market worries unions and other critics.

Rob Marciano and more terror stories about Tornadoes. You want to try talking about survival techniques, Jerk !

Tornadoes
While tornadoes cannot be predicted as early as hurricanes, current weather forecasting technology will often tell us when atmospheric conditions are right for their formation. By sticking around the homestead during a tornado watch, you can help protect yourself from the tremendous damage twisters can cause.
A direct hit from a funnel cloud can turn a wooden home into a pile of chopsticks, toss a minivan around like a tumbleweed and knock trees down faster than Paul Bunyon. So if you live in a tornado-prone area, you might be wise to invest in an underground shelter, ala the Wizard of Oz. (You can use it as a root cellar or nuclear survival shelter as well.)
If you live in an area not known for tornadoes, but suddenly one is baring down on you, your next-best bet is the basement, preferably in the corner closest to the direction of the tornado.
If you are driving around and a tornado is looming, park under an underpass and run up as high as you can under it. If caught out in the open, head for the lowest ground possible, even a drainage ditch is better than nothing.

http://www.survival-center.com/guide/shelter.htm

In Illinois a young boy, about 8 years old was found under debris in a drainage ditch. It is better than nothing. The Illinois tornado occurred at night. I am sure if people were awake the deaths would be lower.

ConocoPhillips Limited has been fined a total of £895,000 and ordered to pay £218,854 costs at Grimsby Crown Court, after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety legislation.

On 29 June 2005 ConocoPhillips Limited was fined a total of £895,000 and ordered to pay £218,854 costs at Grimsby Crown Court, after pleading guilty to breaching health and
safety legislation at an earlier hearing. The case follows an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into two incidents: a fire and explosion at the Humber Refinery, South Killingholme, North Lincolnshire on 16 April 2001 and a release of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the Immingham Pipeline Centre, Immingham Dock, on 27 September 2001. At an earlier hearing at Grimsby Crown Court, ConocoPhillips pleaded guilty to seven breaches of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Pressure Systems and Transportable Gas Containers Regulations 1999.
The first incident happened on 16 April 2001 when 170 tonnes of highly flammable LPG was released from ConocoPhillips' (then Conoco's) Saturate Gas Plant at its Humberside oil refinery.
The gas cloud ignited, causing a large explosion and fire.
As the fire burned it caused failures of other pipework, resulting in another explosion and fireball.
The fire burned for approximately two-and-a-half hours.

Van Zandt: Pirate attack - This is not a drill
COMMENTARY
By Clint Van Zandt

Updated: 3:00 p.m. ET Nov. 7, 2005
Clint Van Zandt
The 151 passengers on the luxury cruise ship Seabourn Spirit knew they would see fascinating and exotic ports of call on their 16-day adventure cruise from Alexandria, Egypt, to Mombasa, Kenya. What they didn't plan on seeing were two Zodiac-type inflatable speedboats filled with heavily armed pirates trying to board their ship 100 miles off the coast of Somalia. While some of the pirates raked the ship with automatic weapon fire, others fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), one of which penetrated the side of the Seabourn Spirit and exploded in an unoccupied passenger cabin.
