I sincerely haven't heard any SINCERE debate in the Senate regarding the issues of immigration. I know all too well this Senate and House has passed bills that amount to empty paragraphs with spending plans rather than substance of law. I cannot fathom this Senate is capable of serious legislation. I would have to hear a good synopsis of the bill before I would trust anything brought forward by Republicans.
Rumsfeld should resign. The scandals never stop. And there are 110 per week wounded soldiers out of Iraq. That is NOT a successful campaign. The only reason this war hasn't topped the body count of Vietnam is because of body armor. So now they simply come home with missing limbs rather than flag drapped coffins. The death rate without body armor would have ended this war a long time ago.

CNN finally posted Roberts credentials. I am sorry. I am sure he is a nice man but he isn't Aaron. The experience Mr. Brown had before CNN was extensive, but, the experience he carried forward with his anchoring was extensive including 911 and leading a news team from Ache after the tsunami. Aaron is no slouch.
John Roberts credentials. The information is somewhat specific but mostly statements about general trends in his career.
I will say this. He is an improvement over Cooper.
The coverage of the tragedy was NOT emoted so much as 'matter of fact.' If people are caught up in emotions it is difficult to motivate for change so much as protection. There needs to be drastic change in the policy regarding Global Warming by the USA. Those words are still not used in this context. The 'exacerbation of 'the numbers' as reported was great. But, people still don't make the connection to the danger linked to high levels of carbon dioxide unless the language is there.

The higher the violence level the more unstable the country's sovereignty. The violence destabilizes authority and allows immigration of terrorist networks.

Tom DeLay cannot win his elections in Texas. He is indicted ! THAT should mean something. If sexual affairs make an impact on a politicians career then so should corruption. Actually, corruption should carry far more penalties than 'an affair.' Sexual exploits are personal with personal impacts unless it involves a compromise to the government or intelligence. This administration is compromising the USA Constitution. Impeachment of these people should have occurred long ago. The Capital Police want to prosecute a legislator for breaking through a security line and she is a Democrat, but, yet the current administration can carry out illegal wars, allow tropospheric vortices to kill people, ignore the needs within our own borders for National Security and RECONSTRUCTION of an entire city of the south, impoverish our work force, demoralize our esteem abroad, destroy the ABM treaty to restore nuclear research to the military initatives, corrupt other nuclear nations without insisting on Anit-proliferation while allowoing huge profits for their cronies at the expensee of the people of this country both personally at the gas station and incredible war debt.
Tom DeLay is no surprise for the level of corruption he inspired with the K Street Gang. The crimes don't stop there but extends through a majority of the Republican Party. We need our country back. We need it back now.

The comments follow moves by Greenpeace and the Environmental Justice Foundation, in cooperation with enforcement authorities from Guinea, to expose pirate-fishing vessels off the West African coast, that are laundering their cargo through European ports.
In a joint operation on board the Greenpeace ship M.Y Esperanza the environmental and human rights organisations have been operating undercover documenting nearly 70 vessels in West African waters for the past ten days.

Global port security came under renewed scrutiny earlier this month when a U.S. political furore over possible national security threats forced a Dubai company to abandon plans to manage U.S. ports.
Washington is particularly concerned about whether nuclear bombs or radioactive material could be smuggled into the United States in one of the 7 million to 9 million containers that enter the country's 361 ports each year, prompting a U.S. project to install radiation detectors at global ports.
Other countries have been slow to take part, however, with many fearing the screening could slow commerce at their ports.
Chertoff, in Tokyo on an Asian trip that will also take him to Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing, lauded Japan's participation in other U.S.-led shipping security efforts but said it had yet to agree to the radiation screening.
"I want to really push, to make it an urgent item to take action on, partly because we have succeeded in concluding agreement with other major ports around the world and I don't think that shippers in Japan want to feel they're competitively disadvantaged," he told reporters.

Morgan Stanley Chief Executive Officer John Mack blamed President Bush for problems faced by DP World as it tried to buy the U.S. assets of the U.K.'s Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co.
''If the administration had taken more time to vet the transaction, DP World would not have had these issues,'' Mack said Monday at a news conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

U.S. senators including Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton blocked a deal approved in January by the Bush administration for DP World to gain control of six U.S container-ship terminals including New York, Miami and New Orleans. Owned by the Maktoum family who rule Dubai, DP World acquired management leases at the ports when it bought U.K.-based P&O for $6.8 billion on March 2.
The decision may affect trade and investment flows between the United States and the Persian Gulf, where record oil earning have triggered an economic boom. ''It's not a wise decision on their part,'' U.A.E. central bank governor Sultan bin Nasser al-Suwaidi said in a March 6 Bloomberg interview.
The U.A.E., Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the three other oil- producing Gulf Arab monarchies' crude oil sales rose 24 percent last year $270 billion, according to figures from Standard Chartered Plc.
Mack was in the Emirates to open Morgan Stanley's first regional office in the Middle East. The world's third largest securities firm is bringing 24 bankers to Dubai as it seeks to tap the region's wealth.
Mack said he plans to meet Schumer next week when he will suggest the New York Democrat come to Dubai in person. ''Americans have to spend time visiting these new emerging markets,'' he said.
Schumer was a leading critic of the DP World deal and led a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers who asked the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to investigate the purchase.
Speaking at a news conference in New York on March 10 he said he opposed the deal not ''because they're an Arab country, but because they're a nexus of terrorism.''

Dubai ports row claims new scalp
WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- The fallout from the derailment by Congress of the Dubai Ports World deal continued Monday, as a company executive withdrew from a controversial nomination.
David Sanborn, nominated in January by President Bush to head the U.S. Maritime Administration, which oversees the nation's ports, is director of operations in Europe and Latin America for the firm, which is owned by the Emirate of Dubai.
Monday the White House said it was withdrawing the nomination, which several senators, including Democrat Bill Nelson of Florida, had vowed to block.
White House spokeswoman Erin Healy told United Press International the withdrawal was at Sanborn's request, which came in a letter to the president Monday.
She would not comment as to whether the move was connected with the successful efforts to block the proposed take-over by the Gulf state-owned company of six U.S. port operations.

Cyclone Glenda Shuts Ports, Oil Fields in Australia (Update3)
March 29 (Bloomberg) -- The fourth tropical cyclone of the year off northwestern Australia strengthened to a category 5 storm, shutting down iron-ore export ports and oil fields as well as interrupting loading of liquefied natural gas cargoes.
Tropical Cyclone Glenda shut Dampier Port and Port Walcott at Cape Lambert, Vic Justice, harbor master at Dampier Port Authority, said today. Port Hedland was also closed this morning. BHP Billiton, the North West Shelf venture, Woodside Petroleum Ltd., Chevron Corp. and Santos Ltd. have all closed oil fields.
The northwest region of Australia is forecast to have about five tropical cyclones this November-April season, which is about the average, the Bureau of Meteorology said last month. Rio Tinto Group, the world's second-largest iron ore exporter, said yesterday its West Australian iron ore mines may have lost more than 20 percent of output this quarter. About 147,000 barrels a day of oil output has been halted.
``This is a seasonal thing, we tend to get lower production and shipments in the first quarter so the market won't be too concerned about it,'' said Mark Pervan, head of research at Daiwa Securities SMBC in Melbourne. ``The disruptions do seem to have been a bit larger than normal this time.''
Glenda, which has maximum wind gusts of as much as 290 kilometers (180 miles) an hour, was 435 kilometers north- northeast of Karratha at 8 a.m. local time today and moving west-southwest at 12 kilometers an hour, the bureau said. The cyclone is forecast to move toward the coast later today.
Very Large Seas
``We're expecting the cyclone to pass very close to us if not adjacent to the port,'' Justice said in an interview. ``We would expect very large seas inside the port, maybe 10-meter (33 feet) seas coming down through the main entrance into the port, extremely strong winds and a considerable amount of rain.''
Rio Tinto may have lost as much as 6 million metric tons of output this quarter at its Western Australian iron ore mines because of cyclones, Warwick Smith, managing director of expansion at Rio's iron ore unit said yesterday.
BHP Billiton has lost about 475,000 tons of output this quarter, Daiwa's Pervan said.
``From a share price point of view the impact is probably mixed to slightly positive because it gives the iron ore producers a bit more leverage in the iron ore price negotiations,'' Pervan said.
Steelmakers in China, the largest user of iron ore, may accept as much as a 10 percent increase in annual contract prices this year for the steelmaking raw material, two Chinese steel industry officials said yesterday.
Preparations
Rio Tinto declared force majeure after cyclones dumped rain and disrupted mining at its West Australian mines March 2. Force majeure is a legal clause that allows a company to miss contracted deliveries because of circumstances beyond its control.
``Any impact the cyclones have had on production we'd be looking to make that up during the course of the year,'' said Katina Dawson, a Perth-based spokeswoman at Rio Tinto.
The Woodside-operated North West Shelf venture halted production at the Cossack Pioneer oil vessel late yesterday and the ship has sailed away, Kirsten Stoney, a spokeswoman for Perth-based Woodside said. The Karratha Spirit used to store oil at the Ocean Legend production facility at the Legendre field has also sailed out of the path of the cyclone.
Natural gas, liquefied natural gas and condensates production is continuing, Stoney said. Loadings of LNG have been interrupted at Karratha, she said.
Evacuation
Chevron Corp., which operates oil production systems on Barrow and Thevenard Island, is closing down output and will evacuate all personnel by 2 p.m. local time today, said Scott Walker, a spokesman for the U.S. company's Australian unit. Santos and Exxon Mobil Corp. have stakes in the ventures. Barrow Island typically produces about 10,000 barrels a day of oil, while Thevenard Island produces about 4,000 barrels a day.
BHP Billiton spokeswoman Emma Meade said the production vessel the company uses at its Griffin oil field is unable to connect to the field because of bad weather. Griffin, in which Exxon Mobil and Inpex Corp. have stakes, produced about 4 million barrels of oil and 5.9 billion cubic feet of gas in the year ended June 30. BHP Billiton is the world's biggest mining company and Australia's largest oil and gas producer.
Adelaide-based Santos, Australia's biggest natural gas producer, halted production at its A$440 million ($313 million) Mutineer-Exeter oil project March 27, its fourth shutdown this year due to a cyclone. The field, in which Nippon Oil Corp., Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. and Woodside have stakes, was producing about 50,000 barrels a day before the shutdown, said Kathryn Mitchell, a spokeswoman.
Western Australia produced about 210,000 barrels a day of oil in 2004, since which time Mutineer-Exeter has started up.

The experience of the people of this storm is important. "The bathtub protection" is not a new story. Tornadoes toss rocks around but don't break them up. In other words, the porcelain is a rock. So the bathtub might be picked up and moved with the tornado but it stays intact along with the person in it. I have heard of entire families huddled in bricked entrance ways to homes living through a direct hit from tornadoes. No one survives a F5 or F6 tornado. They are over 250 miles per hour. An F6 is over 320 mph. Something like that. There is just no way that force will allow skin to stay intact. NASCARS never get over 200 mph, not because engines can't take cars faster in circles around tracks but because the human body can't tolerate the G forces of higher speeds and the crashes that results. So, surviving a tornado is also due to the level of TORNADIC force.

Unsecure ports of entry
OUR OPINION: MUCH WORK REMAINS TO BE DONE TO FIX HOLES IN U.S. SAFETY NET
While Congress was engaged in the hysterical debate over foreign ownership of U.S. ports, something much more dangerous was taking place in America's vulnerable ports of entry. As disclosed yesterday at a congressional hearing, federal investigators were able to smuggle enough radioactive material into the United States last year to make two dirty bombs.
The General Accountability Office is the investigative arm of Congress. In a test in December, undercover GAO teams managed to sneak small amounts of cesium-137 across U.S. border crossing points in Washington State and Texas. Radiation alarms went off, but security inspectors were fooled by phony documents and allowed the material through.
The Bush administration responded by saying that within 45 days it will give U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents the tools to verify false documents in the future. That's of little comfort, considering that we are now well into the fifth year after 9/11 and such gaps could be exploited by terrorists -- without much effort, apparently.
And the GAO had even worse news for Congress: The Homeland Security Department's goal of installing 3,034 radiation detectors by September 2009 at ports of entry across the United States is ''unlikely,'' leaving a huge blind spot on our borders for years to come.
Congress should use the GAO findings to show its true terrorist-fighting credentials. It should act now to move up the 2009 deadline and insist that the administration tighten security at all U.S. ports and entry points. If lawmakers were quick to overturn the Dubai deal, they should be even more eager to deal with the far greater threat posed by real holes in America's security net.

AB Ports Rejects $3.8 Bln Bid From Goldman, Singapore (Update1)
March 29 (Bloomberg) -- Associated British Ports Holdings Plc, the biggest U.K. operator of ports, rejected a 2.2 billion-pound offer ($3.8 billion) from Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Singapore and a Canadian pension fund.
The offer of 730 pence a share was ``wholly inadequate,'' London-based Associated British Ports said in a statement on the U.K.'s Regulatory News Service, after markets closed. Shares of the company today fell 1.9 percent to 717 pence.
The Goldman-led group said March 27 it may bid for Associated British Ports, which owns 21 ports in the U.K. and handles car imports at four U.S. ports. Dubai's DP World in March bought Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., the U.K.'s oldest port company, for $6.8 billion, and was later forced to sell U.S. operations because of lawmakers' security concerns.
New York-based Goldman bid as part of a group including Borealis Infrastructure Management Inc., a unit of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Fund, Canada's No. 4 pension fund; and GIC Special Investments, the private-equity unit of GIC, an investment company owned by the government of Singapore.
Port operators are attracting takeovers as growth in the volume of world trade lifts earnings, and their ability to generate steady returns lures investors. Associated British Ports, which says it handles about 25 percent of Britain's seaborne trade, owns an operation in the U.S. that handles car imports at four ports including Baltimore and Jacksonville, Florida. The company's U.S. operations contributed 4.3 million pounds of 167.6 million pounds of operating profit in 2005.
The company on Feb. 22 forecast that earnings at its U.K. ports business will accelerate in the second half of this year after the opening of two new facilities at the port of Immingham, on the northeast coast of England.

Randall McCloy is doing well. It’s not unusual for people in comas to start to recover and then recovers more and more quickly. Once the mind finds the body and it's way back to wakening it does it quickly. There was that question if the hypoxia did so much damage there was no recovery. But, the decompression chambers worked well. There was 12 other miners but he was in a party of 12.

The UK's biggest ports operator which runs operations in Cardiff, Barry and Newport, emerged today as a £2.3bn bid target after a consortium confirmed it was considering an offer.
Associated British Ports, which operates from 21 sites in the UK and employs more than 3,000 people worldwide, is the subject of interest from a group featuring Goldman Sachs and Canadian investment house Borealis Infrastructure.
Goldman Sachs confirmed it was considering a possible offer after financial newspaper City AM revealed the consortium planned an approach early next month.

Council, Ports clean foreshore

THE Suva City Council and the Fiji Ports Corporation have, for the first time, come together in an effort to clean the Suva foreshore and nearby areas.
SCC Director of Health Nacanieli Kotoiwasawasa said they were glad that at least one of the authorities had joined them for a cleaner-looking Suva and would like to see other organisations do the same.
He said the council had provided the company with trucks and drivers and 30 employees had taken part in the clean up from Monday until Friday.
Apart from looking after the foreshore area, he said, they were also concerned about the cleanliness of streets of Suva.
"We have been cleaning up the streets which started three weeks ago and is still going on because the collection of green goods is still coming in," he said.
The litter decree with the $40 fine is very much alive according to the council.
Mr Kotoiwasawasa said people would be facing the consequences if they were caught littering.

You seem to loathe the idea of confrontation about the problems with those in leadership, but I think it might be helpful for them to know what the problems are, even if they are reluctant to admit or address them. I think you should go for some good Christian counseling, it helps to find someone trustworthy and caring to talk to. Then it probably would be helpful for you to visit other local churches and see if there is one that seems to stand out in making you feel comfortable, spiritually taught and challenged to excellence for the Lord's kingdom. May God bless you and direct you.

Randall McCloy is doing well. It’s not unusual for people in comas to start to recover and then recovers more and more quickly. Once the mind finds the body and it's way back to wakening it does it quickly. There was that question if the hypoxia did so much damage there was no recovery. But, the decompression chambers worked well. There was 12 other miners but he was in a party of 12.

The UK's biggest ports operator which runs operations in Cardiff, Barry and Newport, emerged today as a £2.3bn bid target after a consortium confirmed it was considering an offer.
Associated British Ports, which operates from 21 sites in the UK and employs more than 3,000 people worldwide, is the subject of interest from a group featuring Goldman Sachs and Canadian investment house Borealis Infrastructure.
Goldman Sachs confirmed it was considering a possible offer after financial newspaper City AM revealed the consortium planned an approach early next month.

Council, Ports clean foreshore

THE Suva City Council and the Fiji Ports Corporation have, for the first time, come together in an effort to clean the Suva foreshore and nearby areas.
SCC Director of Health Nacanieli Kotoiwasawasa said they were glad that at least one of the authorities had joined them for a cleaner-looking Suva and would like to see other organisations do the same.
He said the council had provided the company with trucks and drivers and 30 employees had taken part in the clean up from Monday until Friday.
Apart from looking after the foreshore area, he said, they were also concerned about the cleanliness of streets of Suva.
"We have been cleaning up the streets which started three weeks ago and is still going on because the collection of green goods is still coming in," he said.
The litter decree with the $40 fine is very much alive according to the council.
Mr Kotoiwasawasa said people would be facing the consequences if they were caught littering.

You seem to loathe the idea of confrontation about the problems with those in leadership, but I think it might be helpful for them to know what the problems are, even if they are reluctant to admit or address them. I think you should go for some good Christian counseling, it helps to find someone trustworthy and caring to talk to. Then it probably would be helpful for you to visit other local churches and see if there is one that seems to stand out in making you feel comfortable, spiritually taught and challenged to excellence for the Lord's kingdom. May God bless you and direct you.

These sources work or worked at the State Department, the CIA and the National Security Council. Some of these sources are attorneys close to the case. They requested anonymity because they were not permitted to speak publicly about the details of the investigation.
Anderson likes to play "Let's Guess." It's gossipy. The talking heads are seeking to 'gossip' about this to make more of it than it is. Boring. Irrelivant.

Sudan may try to create nuke plan for electricity
KUWAIT CITY (AP) — The impoverished and war-torn country of Sudan is considering trying to create a nuclear programme to generate electrical power, its president told the state-owned Kuwait Television in an interview aired Monday.
President Omar Bashir said his government believes that its energy resources will not cover an expected increase in needs for electrical power in the next 25 years in the Arab-African country.

DeLay appeals suspension of gun license
RICHMOND, Texas U-S Representative Tom DeLay is fighting to regain his Texas concealed handgun permit after it was suspended because of his indictment on felony charges.A Fort Bend County justice of the peace suspended DeLay's license after he was indicted by a Travis County grand jury on charges of conspiracy and money laundering last year.
A judge dismissed the conspiracy charge, but the Sugar Land Republican still faces a felony charge of money laundering.
Under Texas law, the Texas Department of Public Safety can suspend a handgun permit if its holder has been charged with certain misdemeanors or higher.
In papers filed with the court on March 14th, DeLay lawyer Steve Brittain appealed the suspension and asked the court to reconsider the matter. A hearing date has not been set.
A lawyer for the Department of Public Safety says the state will contest the appeal.

WASHINGTON Embattled Congressman Tom DeLay says "all wisdom doesn't reside in ... people in black robes."The Texan today said former and current U-S Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg "don't get it" when they complain of conservative criticism of judges.
O'Connor recently said the criticism has threatened judicial independence to deal with difficult issues such as gay marriage.
Ginsburg has said a Web threat against her and O'Connor was apparently prompted by G-O-P proposals in Congress that tell judges to stop relying on foreign laws or court decisions.
Republican DeLay spoke today to a group of Christian conservatives in Washington.
DeLay last year was indicted in Austin on charges that he improperly funneled corporate donations to Republican candidates for the Texas House.
The lawmaker from Sugar Land says he's innocent.

This is a predictable story. Regarding the father deadlocked over a battle for children in a divorce. At least that is my understanding. The family turned him into authorities because of fear for the well being of his children.
Rahman was arrested two weeks ago when his family reported him to the police after his conversion, Agence France-Presse cited Afghan Supreme Court Judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada as saying March 19. Sharia law provides for capital punishment for any Muslim who converts to another religion and refuses to revert to Islam, AFP cited the judge as saying.
I believe the news media is missing 'the point' to the issue. It goes beyond religious bigotry to the fear of Islam losing it's religion which is the basis to much of the clash between the West and Muslim nations. Cartoons, etc. It is a lot bigger issue than a barbaric and oppressive law.

Attorney: CIA case to have profound impact on reporters

ADA — The attorney representing two reporters during the high-profile Valerie Plame in-vestigation said Friday that the case will have a profound effect on the future of journalism.
“I have to believe that it has a chilling effect on reporters and on sources,” Kurtzberg told The Lima News Friday.
Joel Kurtzberg of New York City was one of eight law experts to speak Friday during Ohio Northern University’s 29th annual Law Symposium. This year’s topic was “Would You Be a Source? Reporter Privilege in the Post 9-11 World.”
Kurtzberg represented New York Times reporter Judith Miller and Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper during the investigation involving Plame being publicly named as a CIA op-erative.
Miller spent 85 days in jail last year for refusing to testify to the grand jury. She later agreed to testify after saying her source, Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby, had voluntarily released her from her promise of confidentiality.
“The real story behind this is her decision to protect her sources in the first place and her willingness to sacrifice her own liberty to fight for a cause that she believes is of paramount importance,” Kurtzberg said. “I think what Judith Miller did, she should be revered. What she did was a very important thing and a very gutsy thing, and I believe it needed to be done.”
Kurtzberg said the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Washington, D.C. Circuit has said that in a grand jury context, there is no reporter privilege under the First Amendment. The court though, left open the possibility that there may be one under federal common law.
While he believes the case is and will continue to impact both reporters and sources, Kurtzberg said it will be hard to ever know just how much.
“It is also very hard to measure the number of stories that don’t get written,” he said. “It is impossible to figure out how many sources don’t go to a reporter with something that is news-worthy out of fear that it may later be disclosed.”
Kurtzberg specifically spoke at the symposium about a test for the reporter’s privilege put forth by D.C. Circuit Judge David Tatel during the Miller case. Kurtzberg said courts have traditionally applied a two-prong test to reporter privilege questions: whether the information being sought is central to the case, and whether the people seeking the information from the reporter have exhausted all reasonable alternatives.
Judge Tatel says that those two prongs are not enough in leak cases where the focus is on who leaked information to the press, but that there needs to be an additional hurdle.
“And that hurdle would require a balance between the harm caused by the leak and the value of the leak itself,” Kurtzberg said. “And it is only if the harm outweighs the value of the leak that disclosure should be permitted.”

The lack of real news regarding the security of this nation is appauling. No one is following the Plame case on a regular basis and their is no 'real truth' coming out of Iraq. The best of the reporters from Iraq are burned out but at least they are writing books.
Bush should fire war brain trust
TOO little, too late. President Bush is going to the nation to bolster his plummeting credibility because the war in Iraq is going badly. He's even admitting the original war plans weren't so great and that it won't be on his watch that troops can be withdrawn. Out of desperation, he's trying candor or a limited version of it. It's not enough.
There is one thing Bush has thus far refused to do, and it's crucial: Fire the people who made the key decisions on whether and how to fight this war. I'm talking about Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Along with Vice President Dick Cheney, they brought on this foreign policy disaster. Cheney ought to get the boot, too, but he was elected with Bush.
I thought I had a pretty good appreciation of how poorly these people had prepared for the war and its consequences. But recently I've been reading excerpts from a new book, "Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq," by Michael Gordon, The New York Times military correspondent, and Bernard E. Trainor, a retired Marine lieutenant general and former Times military correspondent.
The lack of preparation for the postwar period was even more appalling than I had believed. And those early failures haunt us every day. The book reveals that military commanders on the ground warned the Pentagon early on that an insurgency was quickly developing, and different tactics and many more troops would be needed.

DP World steams into controversial waters again

DUBAI Ports World (DP World), which caused a political storm in the US when it acquired P&O's ports in that country, has now sailed into controversy in India.
DP World, which has already been forced to put the US assets that came with its STG4 billion (STG1 = RM6.45) purchase of P&O up for sale, has run into political flak in India. The P&O deal would give DP World, which already has operations in India, some 50 per cent of India's container shipping traffic. Critics of the transaction have suggested that this would amount to a monopoly and have called on central and regional governments to block the deal.Dubai Ports is pressing ahead with expansion plans in India and is confident of winning over critics of a deal that has put 40 per cent of the country's container traffic in the company's hands.

TEMECULA ---- Though the 200-plus supporters of stricter border control who packed a Temecula park Saturday couldn't compare numbers to the 500,000 immigrants' rights activists who jammed downtown Los Angeles, many of the local participants said their staunch opposition to extending rights to illegal immigrants was shared by a majority of Americans.A few speakers at Pala Community Park, however, acknowledged that they were upset that law enforcement didn't arrest the thousands of illegal immigrants marching the streets of Los Angeles on Saturday.
Tim Donnelly, a leader of the Minutemen of California, said he "dreamed" that all Border Patrol cruisers stationed in Campo had been relocated to Los Angeles on Saturday to deal with the illegal immigrants and their supporters who marched "on our streets."

M EXICO CITY - Mexico and major shipping interests are bolstering Pacific ports south of the border, hoping to catch future runoff as an increasing tide of Asian cargo sails toward already clogged ports in California.
Mexican officials in coming weeks plan to study the feasibility of turning Punta Colonet — a sparsely populated, windblown bay on the Baja Peninsula 150 miles south of the U.S. border — into a super-port on par with twin facilities at Los Angeles and Long Beach, the largest western port complex in North America.

Macao steps up border temperature checks amid bird flu scare

MACAO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The Macao authorities have upgraded the body temperature checks at ports out of avian-flu concerns, according to an official press release issued Saturday.
The release from the Information Bureau said medical task forces have been assigned to main ports including the Macao-Hong Kong ferry, the Macao International Airport and the land border linking the mainland city of Zhuhai.
The body temperature checks will be focused on arrivals from nations including Azerbaijan, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt, where the human-infected cases were recently reported, said the release.
The release stressed that if any suspected cases are disclosed by the temperature surveillance, the medical teams will transfer the person suspected of infection to hospital for further checks.

SURFERS have been warned to stay out of the water as rough seas generated by Cyclone Wati continue to batter almost the entire length of the NSW coast.Waves up to 8m have been seen off beaches from southeast Queensland to far-southern NSW since Sunday.
The biggest have been reported in the Sydney metropolitan region, the Hunter and Illawarra.
The conditions have been caused by a low following Cyclone Wati, which moved down from the Coral Sea into the Tasman Sea on Sunday.

Firm defends plans for it to screen U.S.-bound ships
Hong Kong -- A Hong Kong conglomerate that has won a federal contract to screen U.S.-bound cargo in the Bahamas for terrorism threats defended the plan Saturday, saying it would not be feasible for American officials to work in ports across the globe.
Some U.S. lawmakers and security experts have expressed concern about the contract for Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. because American customs agents will not be working with the screening equipment, designed to detect smuggled radioactive materials.
The Hong Kong company is in the final stages of being awarded a no-bid, $6 million contract from the United States for screening at the Freeport Container Terminal in the Bahamas, just 65 miles from the American shoreline.
John Meredith, group managing director for Hutchison Port Holdings, the maritime subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and the world's largest ports company, said it would be impractical for American agents to work in every port that handles U.S.-bound cargo.

The port administrators have a tough time selling some container shipping lines on using the Baltimore port because of its location up the Chesapeake Bay, well off the Atlantic Ocean, but they landed new service last week. They did so, in part, by touting the efficiency of the longshoremen who move up to 37 containers an hour and, after some contentious debate over work rules years ago, continue on the job rain or shine.
As a last resort, Royster said, he could seek to nullify P&O's contract if the health of the port appears in jeopardy, although there is little enthusiasm for a move that could bring more instability - and litigation - to the waterfront.
P&O has been holding regular meetings to provide information and reassure workers - some who have been there for decades - said Mark Montgomery, P&O's senior vice president of East Coast operations. Montgomery has survived other company sales since coming to Baltimore in 1980.
The anxiety is being felt in all of the nearly two dozen U.S. ports, from New York to Miami, affected by DP World's pending sell-off of the U.S. operations it bought from Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., the British parent of P&O Ports.
The port of New Orleans had begun to recover from the Gulf Coast hurricanes last summer and fall when its workers were faced with the ownership question, said Matt Gresham, a port authority spokesman.
"We reached 100 percent of our pre-Katrina ship activity in mid-February," he said. "We had a goal of getting to 60 to 80 percent at the six-month mark and we surpassed that goal. We just want to get word out that we're open for business."
