At Christmastime — holiday time — Christmastime — whatever — the message of family is pounded home. I'm still waiting for a TV classic about a single character not doomed to melt, fall off a cliff or be forced into communal celebration.
No dice. The closest we get this weekend is ABC's Disneyfied remake of "Once Upon A Mattress," a happily-ever-after musical with enough clingy-mom clichés to curdle eggnog.
But the real togetherness play of the season isn't on TV yet. It belongs to the cable industry's politically minded leaders, who this week announced a plan to offer "family tiers" of cable programming.
The move comes as Congress ponders a legislative crackdown on alleged cable indecency and bears all the fending-off marks of an industry determined to (A) self-regulate; (B) end all talk of a la carte cable; and (C) find new ways to sell shows.

John Fisher Burns - Military commanders are commanding the people of Iraq not to squander this opportunity. That sounds like a great relationship with the people in Iraq. It tells me that the lethargy of the Iraqis is mired in the fact they are living their lives without feeling urgency about changing the status quo. These folks lived under a dictatorship. They take life as it comes.

"The Opportunity" is to bring insurgents including the Baathists into the political process. A broad based government. I think it is reaching for a standard that is unrealistic for these people. They are better off in self governing provinces of ethnic preference with clear, defined and defendable boundaries. Where the federal government of Iraq goes is irrelevant. So long as the people of Iraq are safe and maintaining a standard of life that prevents disease and human rights violation; that is the best we can hope for. One day they'll be ready to move on but for now the lack of death hanging over their heads has too seem like a relief to say the very least.

Tribal leader denounces Zarqawi
A senior member of the Jordanian tribe of Iraq's most wanted man says his family has severed all ties with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq angered his clan by ordering last month's triple bombing in the Jordanian capital.
Musa Khalayleh is a Jordanian MP and the second cousin of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq.
In an exclusive interview with the ABC, Mr Khalayleh says his family and his tribe have disowned Zarqawi after he masterminded last month's Amman bombings in which more than 60 people died.
He says the family has publicly proclaimed its loyalty to Jordan's ruling monarchy and to King Abdullah II.
While denouncing Zarqawi's murder of civilians, Mr Khalayleh says the insurgent leader has every right to resist the US occupation force in Iraq.

Iraq Forces Captured Zarqawi A Year Ago - Released Him?

Hussain Kamal confirmed that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi - the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader who has a $25 million bounty on his head - was in custody at some point last year, but he wouldn't provide further details.
A U.S. official couldn't confirm the report, but said he wouldn't dismiss it.
"It is plausible," he said.
Thursday's news tops a list of reports of missed opportunities to capture the 39-year-old terrorist mastermind. An official said the military receives frequent reports of al-Zarqawi sightings, all of which are investigated.

About 100,000 Iraqi civilians - half of them women and children - have died in Iraq since the invasion, mostly as a result of airstrikes by coalition forces, according to the first reliable study of the death toll from Iraqi and US public health experts.
The study, which was carried out in 33 randomly-chosen neighbourhoods of Iraq representative of the entire population, shows that violence is now the leading cause of death in Iraq. Before the invasion, most people died of heart attacks, stroke and chronic illness. The risk of a violent death is now 58 times higher than it was before the invasion….

… They found an increase in infant mortality from 29 to 57 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is consistent with the pattern in wars, where women are unable or unwilling to get to hospital to deliver babies, they say. The other increase was in violent death, which was reported in 15 of the 33 clusters studied and which was mostly attributed to airstrikes…

… "The remaining 58 killings (all attributed to US forces by interviewees) were caused by helicopter gunships, rockets or other forms of aerial weaponry," they write.
The biggest death toll recorded by the researchers was in Falluja, which registered two-thirds of the violent deaths they found. "In Falluja, 23 households of 52 visited were either temporarily or permanently abandoned. Neighbours interviewed described widespread death in most of the abandoned houses but could not give adequate details for inclusion in the survey," they write.

At least 28 people - including 10 policemen - died in Baghdad yesterday in a huge explosion at a suspected militant safe-house that may have been booby-trapped.
The blast was one of the largest to hit the capital since the US bombing raids during the war to remove Saddam Hussein. US army experts estimated that 1,700lb to 1,800lb of explosives had been detonated.
Residents accounted for the majority of the fatalities and US soldiers and Iraqi troops worked through the night to pull potential survivors from the rubble.

Mississippi Soldiers Return Home From Iraq

GULPORT, Miss. -- More than 300 soldiers from the 155th Brigade Combat Team will be home for Christmas.
The soldiers, who were in Iraq for almost a year, will spend the next few days at Camp Shelby before they return home. Some of them arrived Monday in Gulfport.
The troops are expected to return for training at their respective guard armories next spring.
Their homecoming is bittersweet because 14 members of the unit were killed in Iraq.

Joe Johns. Katrina evacuees. They are angry. No doubt about that. You know I have a lot of questions regarding the construction of these houses in New Orleans. Was there ever standards similar to earthquake zones placed on these building? I have been examining some very interesting pictures of the scene in New Orleans. There is a magnificent two story wood frame house built on concrete base and pilings that is intact. This house was underwater. The trees surrounding the house are nearly bare of any foliage and the windows of this house is missing but the house is intact otherwise. Not that there isn't internal damage to the house including interrupted electrical service, but, if one didn't know Katrina ripped though the area it looks like a poorly maintained yard except for obvious missing windows. The owner has the car parked in the driveway for a clean up. It's an amazing picture. The photographer promises to discuss this more tomorrow if she's up to it.

Camp Boom was a base formerly occupied by Saddam's 41st Armored Brigade of the Republican Guard Al Nida Division. When the regime fell, the troops the 41st left the compound and blended into the local population. Anything that could be looted, was - including missiles, artillery, hand grenades and guns. The Iraqis destroyed anything that they could not take with them.
Living conditions for American troops at Camp Boom were basic. There was no air conditioning, no plumbing, and no privacy. Sand the consistency of moon dust damaged equipment. The shells of the dilapidated barracks offered no relief from the searing heat.

When the air war shows up at all in our press, it is never as a campaign, but as scattered bare-bones reports of individual attacks on specific targets, almost invariably based on military announcements. A typical example was reported by Reuters on December 4th: "Two U.S. Air Force F-16 jets dropped laser-guided bombs" which, according to a military spokesperson, killed two "insurgents" after they attacked an army patrol near Balad, 37 miles west of Baghdad. On the same day, Reuters reported that "a woman and two children" were "wounded when U.S. forces conducted an air strike, bombing two houses in Baiji, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad."
And even this minimalist version of the American air war rarely makes it into large media outlets in the U.S.

And these bodies are still intact and they can't figure out the reasons for their deaths? This is outrageous. This is a cover up. Nixon started the process of "Vietnamization" pulling out American forces and rendering the ARVN capable of fighting an effective war against the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) of the North and the allied National Liberation Front. Slowly, ARVN began to expand from its counter-insurgency role to become the primary ground defense against the NLF and PAVN. From 1969-1971 there were about 22,000 ARVN combat deaths per year. Starting in 1968, South Vietnam began calling up every available man for service in the ARVN, reaching a strength of a million soldiers by 1972. In 1970 they performed well in Cambodia and were executing three times as many operations as they had during the American war period. However, the officer corps was still the biggest problem. Leaders were often poorly trained, inept and the equipment continued to be sub-standard as the U.S. tried to upgrade ARVN technology.

The desperate attempt of government officials to brand the Iraqi insurgency with al-Qaida is part of a deliberate misinformation campaign aimed at dissuading the American public from demanding an end to the Iraq war.
“Branding” is a sophisticated form of mind control that involves the manufacture of public perceptions to achieve predetermined objectives. Normally, branding is employed to sell a product or service to consumers by associating it with positive images. For instance, when I think of Nike, Michael Jordan is the first thing that pops into my mind. And who wouldn’t want to be like Mike? By successfully branding its product with one of the most revered sports heroes of all time, Nike has virtually guaranteed an endless stream of semiconscious consumers wandering into the nearest Foot Locker to buy new pairs of $100 shoes.

Family Upset Over Marine's Body Arriving As Freight

SAN DIEGO -- There's controversy over how the military is transporting the bodies of service members killed overseas, 10News reported.

A local family said fallen soldiers and Marines deserve better and that one would think our war heroes are being transported with dignity, care and respect. It said one would think upon arrival in their hometowns they are greeted with honor. But unfortunately, the family said that is just not the case.

Dead heroes are supposed to come home with their coffins draped with the American flag -- greeted by a color guard.

But in reality, many are arriving as freight on commercial airliners -- stuffed in the belly of a plane with suitcases and other cargo.

John Holley and his wife, Stacey, were stunned when they found out the body of their only child, Matthew, who died in Iraq last month, would be arriving at Lindbergh Field as freight.

"When someone dies in combat, they need to give them due respect they deserve for (the) sacrifice they made," said John Holley.

John and Stacey Holley, who were both in the Army, made some calls, and with the help of U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Matthew was greeted with honor and respect.

"Our familiarity with military protocol and things of that sort allowed us to kind of put our foot down -- we're not sure other parents have that same knowledge," said Stacey Holley.

The Holleys now want to make sure every fallen hero gets the proper welcome.

The bodies of dead service members arrive at Dover Air Force Base.

From that point, they are sent to their families on commercial airliners.

Reporters from 10News called the Defense Department for an explanation. A representative said she did not know why this is happening.

Dane Placko must have had a nice buy-line that night. I don't ever remember this type of unethical issue with Aaron's anchoring. I also don't remember as CNNs Senior Anchor, Aaron having an issue with 'immediate' information for Breaking News. CNN 'had' an edge that Aaron Brown maintained with fervor, evidently all the necessity of survival of CNN has fallen away with Junior Achievement at the helm.

Aaron once said of Peter Jennings, (paraphrasing) 'An anchor could easily come into the studio and read through a news program prepared and prioritized by assistants, producers, directors and writers, however, that was never the bad habits of Peter Jennings.' Evidently, it wasn't the habit of Aaron Brown either.

CNN boasts Aaron Brown was negligent in coming to the Anchor Desk during the last crash of the shuttle due to his golfing habits. That never sounded like Aaron Brown to me. But to CNN it was the only objection they had of a man that carried more than his fair share of those operations as a Managing Editor. You'll excuse me but the greater 'Truth' of the circumstances surrounding Aaron and reporting to CNN on the day the shuttle went down is that he was at a charity golf outing and he felt an obligation to finish his 'place' on the celebrity list as well. He wasn't preoccupied with perfecting his golf stroke over the responsibilities at CNN. Typical of Aaron was a habit of setting priorities and carrying through with commitments. That characteristic played out every newscast he put before his viewership and every evening of NewsNight.

Aaron Brown would sooner do without than poach another's broadcast but what is more important is that he would have made sure his bases were covered before he broadcast without the help or indulgence of another newscaster or service. He would have had a CNN microphone and journalist on his video. I can't imagine Aaron Brown risking the chance people would go to FOX network with realization CNN didn't have their act together.

CNN has done their viewership an injustice by replacing Aaron Brown with a far less experienced journalist as an anchor that bridges 'the gap' of expertise with his senior pier with ruthless tactics to invade FOX's space rather than elevating the expertise of CNN. Contract or not this issue shows the level of 'priviledge' this news team feels they have to succeed. They demoralized the news hour with Aaron Brown out of pure ambition without quality and they are now after Greta van Susteren, apologizing and patting themselves on the back all at the same time. Pirates. CNN's new flagship anchor is a pirate.

CNN, Fox News double up on Chicago report

For a little while Thursday night, as snow swirled around the accident scene at Chicago's Midway Airport, the most important man in all of cable TV news was none other than WFLD-Ch. 32 reporter Dane Placko.

Placko, between live on-scene dispatches for Channel 32, was wrapping up an interview with an area resident as part of a report especially for Fox News Channel host Greta Van Susteren around 9:40 p.m. when CNN's Anderson Cooper also cut to him."

I heard Greta in my ear. I was having a conversation with her, but obviously Anderson Cooper was listening in as well," Placko said Friday.

"I was on quite a while with her. It seemed to go fairly well and, as we were wrapping up, I heard [another] voice in my ear--the [Fox] producer in New York, I believe--say, `Oh, by the way, you were also on CNN.' I'm thinking to myself: `Wait a minute. I'm talking to Greta. How can I be on CNN at the same time?'"

The reason is CNN has an affiliate agreement with WFLD, a Fox-owned station, as it does with several other Chicago TV outlets. So it can run material from WFLD, just as archrival Fox News Channel can. But if a reporter is talking directly to one network, it's customary for the other to back off."

Typically you wouldn't want to show Dane Placko speaking to another network," said David Rhodes, Fox News Channel's director of newsgathering. "You'd wait until that's done and your desk would traffic with WFLD, `OK, can we have Dane when Fox is done with him?' Well, they obviously couldn't wait.

"Dane had something good that he was giving to Greta, so they just took it," Rhodes said. "And that's how you end up in a position where Cooper is showing Dane talking to Greta. The good part of it is Dane Placko is such a star, he's on two channels at once."

The poaching was "unintentional," a CNN spokeswoman said. The network said it looked as though he was just interviewing an eyewitness.

"That's what I would say," Rhodes said. "I would be, `Uh, yeah, we didn't know,' and `It was breaking news.' Those are all my stock answers. You call me back next week if we make a mistake and I'll say the same thing. But how could you not know?"

Copying Fox News Channel has its benefits. While Cooper normally gets clobbered by CNN alumna Van Susteren--since launching in the first week of November, on average, he trails Van Susteren by nearly 1 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour--the gap Thursday was far smaller, a little more than 400,000.

But planes don't skid off runways every night, and you don't always get to cherrypick Placko, who wound up at the Midway crash by happenstance.

He was inching down the Stevenson Expressway for a story on the snowstorm's effect on traffic when he heard a bulletin on WBBM-AM 780. Already at the airport was Channel 32's Lilia Chacon, who had planned to report on flight delays.

"Like an idiot, I didn't even check to see how the weather was going to be yesterday and leave the house wearing dress shoes and the basic winter jacket," Placko said. "I had no idea this snowstorm was coming.

"So I get out there [at Midway] and it's just coming down like crazy. Within 10 minutes, my shoes were soaked through and I was freezing cold.

"Yet he also was never hotter.

Cutting room: Station manager Dominic Mancuso is out at WGN-Ch. 9, which is eliminating his position. WGN, like this paper, is owned by Tribune Co.

Around the horn: Norman Chad's syndicated sports column of "23 (more) facts, tried and true, about the widening world of sports television" was reduced to "22 (more) facts" in Wednesday's Chicago Sun-Times.

The version that ran in the Washington Post and many other papers, but not the Sun-Times, included: "If I were on the 37th floor of a building and Jay Mariotti came into the elevator, I guess I'd take the stairs."

Note to Chad: I have been in elevators with Mariotti. I have ridden in cars with him. We've shared flights, both domestic and international, and at least one train trip. It was fine.

The last word: "Kevin is so conservative he wants to take the F out of the FCC."--National Association of Broadcasters President Emeritus Eddie Fritts, at a roast Thursday of FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, according to Broadcasting & Cable.----------
