The US Senate has rejected - by one vote - the Asbestos Bill, presented last year in an attempt to "cap" corporate liabilities for one of the worst minerals-related diseases. Although the Bill may be re-presented later this year, it's more likely to have sunk without trace.
The proposal divided political parties, trade unions, veterans, and businesses, although the Democratic party, mineworkers and environmentalists largely opposed it.
The biggest public relations "guns" were aimed by suporters of the Bill, notably Dow Chemical. While flagrantly refusing to settle claims by victims of the Bhopal conflagration in India, Dow has doled out at least US$3.6 million to lobbyists to apply pressure in favour of the bill.
Some of the lesser-known victims of asbestosis - as well as lead and mercury poisoning -are those employed to clear up the appalling detritus from the Twin Towers disaster of September 11 2001. Eighteen months after the first suit mounted for compensation, many are now suffering from fatal - and preventable - diseases
Under the Bush regime, only 12 mining violations have attracted maximum fines (US$60,000), in contrast to six times this number during the previous half dozen years under Clinton.

US sees UAE trade deal soon

The US hopes to clinch a free trade deal with the UAE within a few months, despite a political firestorm which unraveled a deal to let a Dubai firm manage US port terminals, US Trade Representative Rob Portman said.
Portman said the furore that forced Dubai Ports World to announce last week it would sell recently acquired US port operations would not prevent the two countries from reaching the trade accord.
The planned ports deal had triggered a broad uproar among Republican and Democratic lawmakers who said it would undermine security. Amid media reports that Dubai Ports World might not relinquish control of its US assets, the company insisted on Tuesday it would sell them to a US buyer.

The Carlie Brucia Trial and the sentencing of her killer. Steve Kansler. I am sure as a step father he feels watching her killer die will somehow be a justice for the death of Carlie. That isn't possible. Each person in this world has a place. The place Carlie occupied has been left in void. That is why there is never any such thing as closure. Of course Laurie Brucia feels a profound lose with no resolve to her feelings. Death is alien to her. Death was alien to Carlie until the bitter reality of social fodder found a manifestation. There needs to be a better way of achieving justice. Death of a killer never really closes the pain of loss. The pain of loss goes on forever. Every dead child has caused a change in laws. It stops some of the crime but does not eliminate it. There has to be answer.

The National Crime Victimization Survey includes statistics on reported and unreported crimes in America. Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes, with more than half still being left unreported. Utilizing services such as The National Sexual Assault Hotline can help encourage victims to get help and report what has happened to them so that more perpetrators can be brought to justice.
Young females are four times more likely than any other group to be the victims of sexual assault.

Sorry to hear about your brother's death, Anderson. I lost a nephew to suicide. It's very difficult. He hung himself from the barn rafters where all the animals he loved lived. Eddy was a big and soft heart in life. He collected all the misfits and treated them like family. As a result the brush burn issues of his young adult life proved too much for him and he turned to alcohol and marijuana. He was drunk purposely when he killed himself. He loved his family too much to do it to us. He had to play Molly Hatchet in his earphones and down a six pack of beer to bring his life to an end. He had every reason to live. So did Carlie Brucia.

Lighting strike is one possibility. I think it is also a neglect issue as the companies involved were exploiting methane extraction at the same time the mine was occupied by miners. They didn't care about the danger or the loss of miners. They were willing to pay the penalities while realizing they would simply continue to do business. The mines with penalities need to be closed until every aspect of safety is addressed. The fact of the issue if the coal mines closed and the public finally moved onto other forms of energy in it's absence the mining industry might find out it truly is an antiquated form of fuel.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — On the first day of the firestorm involving Dubai's purchase of a global port management company, I phoned my friend Rashid al-Oraimi, opinion editor at Al Ittihad, a government-owned newspaper of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss the fierce reaction in the USA. No problem, Rashid said. The deal would go through "because Abu Abdullah OK'd it."
Who is Abu Abdullah? I asked.
"George Bush, of course," my friend answered, laughing, explaining that Abu Abdullah is the nickname given Bush in the inner circles of the Persian Gulf region.
Funny indeed, but as it turned out it's the wrong answer in this case.
